Riverside shooting: Ex-convict killed officer, police say
Police on Tuesday released the name of a man who they say killed a highway patrol officer before he was fatally wounded in a Southern California shootout.
Aaron Luther was the man who authorities believe killed a California Highway Patrol officer and wounded two others in Monday’s shootout in Riverside, city police Officer Ryan Railsback said.
Luther was shot during the gunfire exchange with officers and was pronounced dead at a hospital, Railsback said.
The slain officer was identified by California Gov. Gavin Newsom as Andre Moye, 34.
Police said the incident started when one of the officers was shot after pulling over a vehicle near Interstate 215 and Eastridge Avenue.
The officer called for help, which brought officers from three agencies to the scene, police said.
Two injured CHP officers were being treated at a hospital. One of them was in critical condition Monday evening, CHP Assistant Chief Scott Parker said.
Luther spent time in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, Railsback said.
Police said they didn’t immediately know why Luther fired on officers.
